Chapter Twenty-six

Nova tried to ignore the smell of ash as he scaled the tree, focusing on the familiar bark beneath his grip. Hand over hand, he made the slow, treacherous ascent up the giant gnarled oak that fed its roots from the magical hot spring. Growing in such a prime location had obviously imbued the tree with a little magic of its own, as the top of the tree never seemed to get any closer, no matter how far he climbed. He was far enough up to see across the top of the forest to the ash and smoke rising from Pernrith, and yet his tree ascended further still.

He began to climb again but was distracted by a sudden wild roar. He stared in horror as a wall of flame suddenly raced across the trees from the direction of the village. Within moments the firestorm had reached his spring. Red hot flames barreled through the clearing, bucking and raging like a wild beast, devouring everything in sight. The water in the spring was gone in an instant, consumed by the heat. Trees surrounding the clearing began to fall under the weight of the flames that greedily consumed them. This was unlike any fire that Nova had ever seen. This fire moved as if alive and determined to feast upon everything before it. The howl of the storm drowned out all other sound around him, including his own thought. Nova could feel the unbearable heat as the flames began to rise, swirling viciously around his tree. He looked up frantically to see a familiar white dove perched in the tree above, watching him.

“Help me!” Nova cried.

Are you sure you want my help, child?

“Please!” Nova screamed as the flames reached him, threatening to consume him.

Very well, came the voice, and then all was black.
